This involves using lots of detergent and water before we put the dishes in the dishwasher and start the dishwasher program. However, from both an ecological and financial point of view, we are making a big mistake with this decision.

In addition, there is a great risk that old dishwashing sponges, brushes or even towels will be used for washing dishes by hand. As a rule, these kitchen and washing-up aids are always damp and warm, which is an ideal breeding ground for pathogens of all kinds and shapes.

Why is it usually not necessary to pre-rinse the dishes when washing with a dishwasher?

Modern dishwashers usually have a sensor or “aqua sensor” as standard.

The small device measures the contamination of the water during washing. Based on the values determined, the sensor regulates the dishwasher’s energy and water consumption.

So if you pre-rinse your dishes, you fool the sensor into thinking that the dishes are not excessively dirty. This is usually followed by automatic activation of the economy mode by the dishwasher or its integrated sensor. The fact that the dishes to be cleaned still have dirt residues is therefore easy to understand against this background.

Environmentally, pre-rinsing is nonsense.

Experts consider pre-rinsing dishes to be unnecessary and instead of using water twice, consumers should carefully remove only food residues. The dishwashers then take care of the rest.

What do experts advise about when and how to prewash as an exception?

As a general rule, experts advise that only enormously coarse food residues should be removed from dirty dishes. All other impurities are mastered by the dishwasher itself without major problems.

However, there are some residues that require a little more effort and may well justify pre-rinsing the dishes. These include:

• Burnt-on and
• heavily dried food residues
• small vegetable residues

Here, the expert world gives the advice to refrain from hand washing and prefer soaking or wiping dishes. In fact, various tests have shown that significantly less water is used in this way, which in turn is very likely to benefit the household’s eco-balance.

How can you save water when pre-rinsing?

What we should always keep in mind is that “water is not a given.” Everyone should be aware of this and appreciate it accordingly. To let the water run permanently during pre-rinsing and to let liters disappear “just like that” down the drain is not exactly helpful for our environment as well as our budget – on the contrary.

Here’s how to pre-rinse properly:

• To remove stubborn food residues, it is perfectly sufficient to drizzle the dishes with a little dishwashing liquid.
• Subsequently, a full shot of warm water should be sufficient to soften the residues and ultimately remove them.
• If there are several pieces, it is recommended to fill the sink with warm water and a little detergent and put them in. In this way, the dishes will soften in peace and the dirt will disappear by itself within a few minutes.

If you follow these tips and only prewash dishes in exceptional cases, you will be able to get your clean dishes out of the dishwasher in the future without having a guilty conscience towards the environment. It will also be good for your wallet, because saving water also means saving on operating costs.

How much electricity does a dishwasher consume?

Unlike hand washing, a dishwasher requires electricity to function. On the EU label, which must be attached to every new appliance, the power consumption is given in kilowatt hours (kWh). The electricity consumption listed there is an estimate based on 100 standard wash cycles. Of course, depending on how often and how you use your dishwasher, electricity consumption may vary and actual consumption may differ greatly from the stated consumption. On the EU label, you also have the opportunity to see at first glance how energy efficient a device actually is. The machine’s energy efficiency class is highlighted in particularly large letters. Dishwashers with energy efficiency class A are the best appliances since March 2021. What many of the above “hand washers” probably don’t know is that the water consumption of even a 10-year-old dishwasher is lower than when washing dishes by hand. For example, washing dishes by hand uses an average of 46 liters of water. The dishwasher uses only about 15 liters of water for the same amount of dishes.

Nevertheless, today’s dishwashers naturally also differ in their water consumption. Particularly economical models even consume less than 10 liters per wash cycle, but most are in the range of 10 to 13 liters. Here again, we want to use a table to show what a standard dishwasher with 12-14 place settings consumes in water for approx. 280 annual wash cycles. The energy efficiency class is irrelevant here.

How much electricity and water is consumed compared to hand washing?

A comparison to washing dishes by hand is of course always somewhat difficult, since it depends on how often and how much dishes are washed by hand, which of course also varies the consumption of water. Nevertheless, experts agree that washing dishes with a machine is significantly more environmentally friendly overall than doing the job by hand. This has been proven in numerous tests with both newer and older dishwashers.

Particularly in terms of water consumption, the dishwasher performs significantly better in ecological terms. Only in the use of detergent is there still room for improvement, as the machine requires somewhat more chemicals.

How much additional energy can the energy button save?

You should use the Eco wash cycle as often as possible for lightly soiled dishes. It lowers the wash temperature by 5 °C, which results in an energy saving of approx. 10 %.

Who accepts a dishwasher or disposes of it properly?

Whether the appliance is defective or it is working, disposing of major household appliances is usually very simple. If you want to dispose of your dishwasher, there are several options, which we will now explain below.

1st possibility: Municipal recycling center

Many municipalities offer a free collection service of disused large household appliances. Often there is also a bulky waste appointment for this. The cost of this service is already included in the waste fee. However, some municipalities do not pick up and instead offer to accept the dishwasher free of charge at the recycling center. Then you have to take care of the transport to the disposal point yourself.

2nd option: Donate or place an ad

Another way to get rid of the dishwasher is, for example, donating it to social department stores or offering it in a classifieds portal such as Ebay Classifieds . After posting the ad, it usually takes only a few hours for interested scrap dealers to get in touch. If the device is only partially defective or still works, you can even charge a small amount for it. The advantage of this disposal option is that you don’t even have to carry or dismantle the appliance yourself if you let interested parties know before you pick it up. 3rd option: old appliance disposal by the dealer.

Likewise, you can give the old dishwasher right along with the delivery of a new dishwasher. Since 2016, it has been mandatory for every major retailer to take back old appliances. The latter must take back the appliance free of charge if its sales area exceeds 400 square meters. This also includes online retailers such as Amazon or Otto. Transport costs may be charged, but the major retailers usually waive them as well, so this option to dispose of the dishwasher should be quite convenient for you.

4th option: selling individual parts

If you or a member of your family or circle of friends are in a position to cannibalize the dishwasher yourself, you can furthermore offer or repair the appliance in individual parts, for example on the Internet, and sell it back in working order.

Why do large household appliances have to be disposed of properly?

There are several reasons for this. First and foremost is the recyclability of individual parts and thus the conservation of natural resources. If you give the appliance to a non-urban scrap dealer, it is usually cannibalized. That is, functional parts such as spray arm, pumps, hoses, controls are resold as used dishwasher spare parts. Cables and metal are recycled and made into new products.

Can plastic dishes be put in the dishwasher at all, and what needs to be taken into account?

Every now and then you hear that plastic dishes can melt or otherwise be damaged in the machine by the hot water. This is not (any longer) the case with newer dishwashers without heating elements. Also, discoloration of the plastic by dyes that escape from food residues due to high temperatures is rather rare nowadays. Nevertheless, it makes sense to wipe coarse food residues and tomato sauce off the plate first and dispose of them before putting the dishes in the dishwasher. This will also help you avoid unpleasant odors in the machine.

Make sure that the plastic dishes are dishwasher safe or dishwasher safe.

The reason why plastic does not dry in the dishwasher

The reason plastic doesn’t dry in the dishwasher is due to the properties of the material. Plastic conducts heat much worse than ceramic or glass and cools down quickly.

The drying process looks like that in the dishwasher all items in the rinse cycle become equally warm. During the drying program, the remaining moisture on the warm surface of the dishes should then evaporate. While e.g. porcelain, glass or even metal can absorb heat well because of their conductivity and the water evaporates so quickly on the warm surface of the dishes, plastic cannot do this because of its poor thermal conductivity. • Place a drying towel in the top rack of the dishwasher so that it absorbs the residual moisture.
• Drying with a towel.

How long does a program take these days?

This question cannot be answered in a blanket manner. It depends primarily on which model you own, which program you choose and how old the dishwasher is. If you choose a so-called short program, for example, it will take a maximum of half an hour. If, on the other hand, you choose a standard rinse cycle, it can take between 90 minutes and three hours.

The rinse cycle always takes longer if you put away a lot of dishes that are also heavily soiled. This is because no express program can be used in that case.

Why do the new dishwashers take much longer than the old ones?

The new machines are designed with one thing in mind: They are designed to save energy, thereby protecting both the environment and your wallet. The programs effectively save electricity and water when they take longer to run. Among other things, a lower temperature is used for rinsing and drying. To still achieve the same result, the dishes must remain in the water or warm air longer. The reprocessing of the water also plays a role here.

While the rinse cycle used to be usually finished within 1 hour, nowadays you wait a very long time for the redeeming final signal. However, you don’t have to worry at all that the longer programs will cause the machine to wear out more or consume more energy. The opposite is the case, because the modern devices are designed quite differently.

What factors affect the duration of the program in the dishwasher?

This question can be answered quite simply. The more the dishwasher has to do, the longer the wash cycle will take.

Rule of thumb: If you load the machine fully and do not pre-rinse the dishes, you will have to use a normal program. This takes more time with modern, efficient machines.
As indicated above, the duration is influenced by the age of the dishwasher, among other factors. New machines need at least 30% longer than comparable old machines; sometimes even twice as long.

If you opt for an eco program, you can conserve resources even more. However, the dishwashing cycle will then take even longer. A positive side effect is that the dishes are spared and look like new for longer.

What factors play a role in energy-efficient dishwashing?

First and foremost, the age of the dishwasher determines how efficiently washing works. If you opt for a current model with a good or very good energy efficiency rating, you will achieve the same results with lower consumption. If, on the other hand, you define efficiency by the time the machine needs to do its work, you should choose a fast program and accept higher consumption. In the long run, however, a short program duration does not make sense.

Many consumers believe that they can increase the efficiency of the dishwasher by pre-rinsing the dishes by hand. This is not true. By pre-rinsing, you unnecessarily use a lot of extra water and energy for heating. Dishwashing detergent is also anything but good for our wastewater.

Therefore, in most cases, it makes sense to remove the coarse residues from the plates. You should refrain from pre-rinsing, unless you are dealing with burnt-on food or extremely greasy food.

How can you shorten the dishwashing process?

When it comes to dishwashers, things always go faster when the machine has to do less to get the dishes clean. Don’t load the dishwasher full, use quick programs and remove all coarse debris from the dishes in advance.

If it is very important to you that the dishes get clean quickly, you should do without the Eco program. In addition, it is important to compare the different models even before buying with a focus on the program duration and see if the models also offer the option “half load” or similar.

When do dishes need to be soaked?

It is recommended to soak dishes when the food residues have already dried and you are washing them by hand. Conversely, you can do without it if you wash the dishes directly after the meal and the food residues have not yet dried through.

It is also advisable to soak pots and pans before washing them. Especially if, for example, milk, sauce or other food has burnt on.

How should you soak the dishes?

To do this, proceed as follows:

• First, remove coarse food residues and dispose of them in the trash can.
• If you need to do it quickly, use warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid for pots and pans for soaking. If you have more time, you can also use cold water. One drop of dishwashing liquid is actually enough, even if this amount seems too little for you.
• You can put plates and cups in cold or warm water in the sink. Add some dishwashing liquid there as well.

If, for example, pots or pans are very encrusted with burnt-on food, you can also put water in there with a squirt of dishwashing liquid and put the pot on the stove. Heat the water until it almost boils. This will loosen burnt-on food residue quite quickly.

How long do dishes need to soak?

The amount of time dishes should soak depends on the degree of soiling. However, 5 to 10 minutes should be sufficient for normal food residues. Burnt-on food sometimes takes longer.

Using a dishwasher sustainably: Is soaking necessary here, too?

Dishwashers loosen even stubborn soils due to the constant circulation of water, heat and detergents. So pre-rinsing or soaking is usually not necessary.

To get the full cleaning effect, you should always dose dishwasher salt, rinse aid and detergent according to the manufacturer’s instructions or use a suitable combination product. Eco-rinse programs, if available, save energy and are always preferable to use. However, since these use comparatively low temperatures, you should still select a program with 60° C or higher at least once a month. In this way, you also clean the dishwasher at the same time.

Manufacturers distinguish between 3 types of dishwashers:

• Table dishwasher
• Dishwasher with 45 cm width

Table dishwashers are in demand wherever there is no space or need for standard dishwashers: in mini-kitchens, mobile homes or offices. Otherwise, the standardized standard devices offer more convenience.

Manufacturers always specify the capacity of the dishwasher in terms of dish arrangement. Tabletop dishwashers take 4-6 sets of dishes. 6-10 sets of dishes fit in dishwashers 45 centimeters wide. Dishwashers with a width of 60 centimeters can wash 11-17 sets of dishes at the same time.

What is a place setting?

The European standard DIN EN 50242 defines what a place setting is. A single place setting consists of these 11 parts:

What is special about silver as a material?

How can you tell if it is silver cutlery?

If you have inherited silverware or would like to purchase some at a flea market, for example, the question often arises as to whether it is genuine, valuable silverware. But you can quickly find out. All you need is a magnet and a magnifying glass.

With the magnifying glass, you can search the cutlery for an embossed stamp, also called a hallmark. If it is high quality silver cutlery, you will find a number between 625 and 925. The higher this number, the higher the silver content. The rest is made of other metal, often copper. Pure silver in the form of cutlery does not exist, because it is much too soft. Two-digit numbers such as 90 silver indicate that it is silver-plated flatware only. Likewise, a 120 or 150 means that only one layer of silver, albeit solid, has been applied here. Underneath the silver layer is a different metal. 90 silver flatware is commonly found, but 925 sterling silver is less common.

If you can’t find a stamp or are still unsure, you can hold a magnet to the flatware. Consequently, since silver is not magnetic, the cutlery should not be attracted.

Advantages and disadvantages of silver cutlery

It should be emphasized that silver has a high antibacterial effect. In addition, it conducts heat poorly. As a result, cold food stays cold longer, hot food stays hot longer. Silver cutlery is particularly popular because it is usually very decorative and fits well on the festive table on special occasions. Many silver cutlery are nobly decorated and thus also visually a real eye-catcher. In addition, the festive cutlery is a small value investment, depending on the amount of silver of course.

But silver does not only have advantages. Unfortunately, it tarnishes quickly and then becomes unsightly black. This is due to a chemical reaction with the hydrogen sulfide in the air. But if the cutlery is also cleaned incorrectly, discoloration can also occur.

Can you prevent silver from tarnishing?

There is certainly something that can be done to prevent silverware from tarnishing black. One or two tricks in storage can prevent discoloration.

Tip #1: Store silverware wrapped in silver cleaning cloths.

If you store silver cutlery wrapped in silver cleaning cloths, for example, the reaction with the room air is contained. Likewise, you can place chalk or salt in the silverware drawer, which will bind the hydrogen sulfide from the air.

Tip #2. Use silverware more often

How to clean discolored silver cutlery?

If the cutlery is tarnished, a simple trick helps to quickly remove the discoloration: fill the sink with water and dissolve a few tablespoons of table salt in it. Now place a sheet of aluminum foil in the sink with the shiny side facing up and place the silverware on top. The dark discolorations will now come off on their own, you only need to polish again.

You can also use baking soda or baking powder to make a paste with water, which you can then use to rub off the silverware. Afterwards, however, it must be rinsed again. A bath in diluted citric acid or vinegar also helps to remove discoloration. However, this will take at least an hour. Alternatively, you can of course also use special cleaners for silver.
